Workplace Injury Rehabilitation & WSIB in Oakville

A workplace injury can turn your life upside down. Beyond the physical pain, you’re suddenly navigating unfamiliar territory—WSIB claims, employer paperwork, medical appointments, and uncertainty about your job and income. At Midas Physiotherapy in Oakville, we understand workplace injuries and the unique challenges injured workers face. We’re here to help you recover, return to work safely, and get your life back on track.

As a WSIB-registered healthcare provider, we work within Ontario’s workplace injury system every day. We know the paperwork, the timelines, and the processes. More importantly, we know how to provide effective rehabilitation that gets injured workers better—not just treatment that looks good on paper, but treatment that actually helps you heal and return to meaningful work.

Whether you’ve suffered a sudden injury on the job or developed a condition over time from repetitive work activities, we can help. You pay nothing out of pocket for approved WSIB claims—treatment costs are covered by WSIB. Your focus should be on getting better, not worrying about how to pay for care.

Types of Workplace Injuries We Treat

Workplace injuries range from sudden traumatic events to conditions that develop gradually over months or years. We treat the full spectrum of work-related musculoskeletal conditions.

Acute Traumatic Injuries

Sudden injuries from specific workplace incidents:

  • Slips, trips, and falls: Back injuries, fractures, sprains, strains, and contusions from falls on wet floors, uneven surfaces, or from heights
  • Lifting and manual handling injuries: Back strains, herniated discs, and muscle tears from lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying
  • Struck-by injuries: Injuries from falling objects, moving equipment, or vehicles
  • Caught-in/between injuries: Injuries from machinery, equipment, or collapsing materials
  • Motor vehicle accidents: Injuries occurring while driving for work (may involve both WSIB and auto insurance)
  • Workplace violence: Physical injuries from assaults or altercations at work

Repetitive Strain and Overuse Injuries

Conditions that develop gradually from repetitive work activities:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome: From repetitive hand and wrist movements, vibrating tools, or sustained awkward positions
  • Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow: From repetitive gripping, twisting, or lifting activities
  • Rotator cuff disorders: From overhead work, repetitive reaching, or heavy lifting
  • Tendinopathies: Various tendon problems from repetitive stress
  • De Quervain’s tenosynovitis: Thumb and wrist tendon inflammation from repetitive movements
  • Trigger finger: From repetitive gripping or vibrating tools
  • Thoracic outlet syndrome: From sustained overhead positions or repetitive arm movements

Back and Spinal Injuries

  • Low back strains and sprains: The most common workplace injury—from lifting, bending, twisting, or prolonged postures
  • Herniated discs: From acute trauma or cumulative stress on the spine
  • Sciatica: Nerve pain radiating into the leg from spinal problems
  • Neck pain and whiplash: From sudden trauma or sustained awkward postures
  • Degenerative conditions aggravated by work: When pre-existing spinal conditions are worsened by work activities

Other Workplace Conditions

  • Knee injuries: From kneeling, squatting, climbing, or trauma
  • Ankle and foot injuries: From falls, uneven terrain, or prolonged standing
  • Hip injuries: From falls, heavy lifting, or repetitive movements
  • Fractures: From falls, struck-by incidents, or machinery
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation: Recovery after surgery for work-related injuries
  • Chronic pain: Persistent pain from workplace injuries that hasn’t resolved with initial treatment

The WSIB Claims Process

Understanding the claims process helps ensure you receive the benefits you’re entitled to. Here’s what happens after a workplace injury:

Step 1: Report the Injury

  • Report to your employer immediately: Tell your supervisor or employer about the injury as soon as possible—ideally the same day
  • Document what happened: Note the date, time, location, how the injury occurred, and any witnesses
  • Your employer must report: Employers are legally required to report workplace injuries to WSIB within 3 days if you need healthcare or miss time from work

Step 2: Seek Medical Attention

  • Get prompt medical care: See a doctor, go to a walk-in clinic, or visit emergency if needed
  • Tell them it’s work-related: Make sure the healthcare provider knows this is a workplace injury
  • Get a Functional Abilities Form (FAF): This form documents what you can and can’t do, guiding return-to-work planning

Step 3: File Your Claim

  • Complete a Worker Report of Injury (Form 6): You can file online through WSIB’s website or submit a paper form
  • Be thorough and accurate: Describe the injury, how it happened, and your symptoms completely
  • File promptly: While you have up to 6 months to file, delays can complicate your claim

Step 4: Claim Decision

  • WSIB reviews your claim: They’ll consider the employer’s report, your report, and medical documentation
  • Initial Entitlement: WSIB decides if your injury is work-related and what benefits you’re entitled to
  • You can appeal: If your claim is denied or you disagree with the decision, you have the right to appeal

Step 5: Treatment and Recovery

  • Receive healthcare: WSIB covers reasonable and necessary healthcare for your injury
  • Participate actively: Engage in your treatment, follow medical advice, and work toward recovery
  • Communicate with WSIB: Keep them informed of your progress and any changes in your condition

Our Approach to WSIB Rehabilitation

We take a comprehensive, goal-oriented approach to workplace injury rehabilitation. Our focus is on helping you recover fully and return to safe, sustainable employment—not just managing symptoms indefinitely.

Thorough Assessment

Every WSIB patient receives a comprehensive initial assessment that examines not just your injury, but your overall situation:

  • Injury history: Exactly what happened, how your symptoms developed, and how they’ve progressed
  • Physical examination: Detailed assessment of your injury, range of motion, strength, and function
  • Job demands analysis: Understanding the physical requirements of your job to guide treatment and return-to-work planning
  • Functional capacity: What you can currently do safely versus what your job requires
  • Barriers to recovery: Identifying factors that might slow your recovery—physical, psychological, or social
  • Treatment goals: Establishing clear, measurable goals for your rehabilitation

Evidence-Based Treatment

We use treatments that research has shown to be effective for workplace injuries:

  • Manual therapy: Hands-on treatment to restore joint mobility, reduce muscle tension, and relieve pain
  • Exercise rehabilitation: Targeted exercises to restore strength, flexibility, endurance, and function
  • Work conditioning: Progressive exercises that simulate your job tasks to prepare you for return to work
  • Education: Understanding your injury, pain, proper body mechanics, and injury prevention
  • Modalities: Therapeutic tools like ultrasound, electrical stimulation, laser therapy, and taping when indicated
  • Ergonomic advice: Recommendations to modify work tasks and prevent re-injury

Active Participation

Research consistently shows that active rehabilitation produces better outcomes than passive treatment alone. We’ll teach you exercises and strategies to continue your recovery between appointments and after discharge. Your active participation is the most important factor in your recovery.

Regular Progress Monitoring

We track your progress objectively using standardized outcome measures. This allows us to:

  • Demonstrate improvement to you, your employer, and WSIB
  • Identify when treatment is working and when approaches need to change
  • Provide accurate functional updates for return-to-work planning
  • Support discharge when you’ve achieved your goals

Return to Work Programs

Getting you back to work safely and sustainably is a primary goal of WSIB rehabilitation. Research shows that early, safe return to work actually promotes recovery—staying off work longer doesn’t always lead to better healing and can actually make recovery harder.

Modified Duties

If you can’t return to your full job immediately, modified or transitional work allows you to stay connected to the workplace while respecting your current limitations:

  • Light duties: Tasks that don’t require the activities you currently can’t do safely
  • Reduced hours: Gradually increasing your work hours as tolerance improves
  • Task modifications: Changing how tasks are performed to reduce physical demands
  • Temporary restrictions: Specific limitations documented by your healthcare providers

Graduated Return to Work

For many injuries, a graduated approach works best—starting with lighter duties or fewer hours and progressively increasing as you build tolerance. We help coordinate this by:

  • Providing clear, updated functional abilities information
  • Recommending appropriate restrictions and progressions
  • Communicating with employers and WSIB as needed
  • Adjusting treatment to support your return-to-work plan

Work Conditioning and Work Hardening

For workers who need to rebuild their capacity for demanding jobs, we offer:

  • Work conditioning: Progressive exercises that build strength, endurance, and tolerance for work activities
  • Job simulation: Practicing work-like tasks to prepare for return to the job
  • Functional progression: Systematically increasing demands to match job requirements
  • Body mechanics training: Learning safer ways to perform job tasks

Your Rights and Responsibilities

Your Rights as an Injured Worker

  • Right to claim: You have the right to file a WSIB claim for any work-related injury or illness
  • Right to healthcare: You’re entitled to reasonable and necessary healthcare for your work injury
  • Right to benefits: If entitled, you’ll receive loss of earnings benefits and other applicable compensation
  • Right to return to work: Your employer must cooperate in return to work and offer suitable work if available
  • Right to appeal: You can appeal WSIB decisions you disagree with
  • Right to representation: You can have someone help you with your claim, including the Office of the Worker Adviser
  • Right to privacy: Your medical information is protected and shared only as necessary for your claim

Your Responsibilities

  • Report promptly: Report injuries to your employer and WSIB in a timely manner
  • Provide accurate information: Be truthful about how the injury occurred and your symptoms
  • Seek and follow treatment: Get appropriate healthcare and follow medical advice
  • Cooperate with return to work: Work with your employer on return-to-work efforts, including accepting suitable modified work
  • Report changes: Notify WSIB of changes in your condition, employment, or contact information
  • Attend appointments: Keep scheduled healthcare and WSIB appointments

Documentation and Reporting

Proper documentation is essential for WSIB claims. We handle the clinical documentation so you can focus on your recovery.

What We Provide

  • Functional Abilities Form (FAF): Documents what you can and can’t do, guiding return-to-work planning
  • Treatment plans: Detailed plans outlining your condition, treatment approach, and expected recovery
  • Progress reports: Regular updates on your improvement and functional status
  • Discharge summaries: Documentation of outcomes achieved and recommendations for ongoing management
  • Communication with WSIB: Direct correspondence with WSIB case managers as needed

Billing and Payment

For approved WSIB claims, you pay nothing out of pocket. We bill WSIB directly for authorized treatment. This includes your assessment, treatment sessions, and any required documentation.

If your claim is denied or treatment isn’t approved by WSIB, we’ll discuss your options, which may include appealing the decision, paying privately, or using private insurance.

Common WSIB Challenges and How We Help

Claim Denials

Sometimes WSIB denies claims or specific treatments. If this happens, we can help by providing additional clinical documentation to support your claim, clarifying the work-relatedness of your condition, and recommending you seek assistance from the Office of the Worker Adviser if needed.

Slow Recovery

Not all injuries heal on a predictable timeline. When recovery is slower than expected, we identify barriers to progress, adjust treatment approaches, consider referral for specialist consultation if appropriate, and provide realistic expectations while maintaining active rehabilitation.

Return to Work Conflicts

Sometimes disagreements arise about what work is suitable. We provide objective, clinical documentation of your functional abilities, advocate for appropriate restrictions when medically necessary, and help facilitate communication between you, your employer, and WSIB.

Pre-existing Conditions

Having a pre-existing condition doesn’t mean your work injury isn’t covered. If work aggravated, accelerated, or activated a pre-existing condition, you may still be entitled to benefits. We document how work activities contributed to your current condition, regardless of prior history.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start treatment for my workplace injury?

First, report your injury to your employer and ensure a WSIB claim has been filed. Then call us to book an appointment—let us know it’s a workplace injury when you call. We’ll verify your claim with WSIB and begin treatment. If your claim is still being processed, you can start treatment while it’s adjudicated.

Do I have to pay anything for WSIB treatment?

No. For approved WSIB claims, treatment costs are covered by WSIB. We bill WSIB directly—you don’t pay out of pocket. This includes your assessment, treatment sessions, and any required reports or documentation.

Do I need a referral from a doctor?

You don’t need a formal referral to see us for physiotherapy, but you should have your injury documented by a physician. This medical documentation supports your WSIB claim. If you haven’t seen a doctor yet, we recommend doing so, but you can begin treatment with us while arranging this.

My claim was denied—can I still get treatment?

Yes, though payment options differ. You can appeal the WSIB decision (which we can support with documentation), pay privately for treatment, or use your extended health insurance if you have coverage. We can discuss your specific situation and options.

How long will I need treatment?

This varies greatly depending on your injury. Some conditions improve in a few weeks, while others require longer rehabilitation. We’ll give you a realistic estimate after your initial assessment and update expectations as your recovery progresses. Our goal is efficient, effective treatment—not prolonged unnecessary care.

Can I choose my own healthcare provider?

Yes. You have the right to choose your healthcare providers under WSIB. You’re not required to see a WSIB-recommended provider. As a WSIB-registered clinic, we can treat your workplace injury and bill WSIB directly.

What if my employer wants me to return to work but I don’t feel ready?

Your return to work should be guided by your functional abilities, not just your employer’s needs. We document what you can safely do, and return to work should respect these limitations. If you’re being pressured to return to unsuitable work, the documentation we provide can support your position. You can also contact the Office of the Worker Adviser for help.

What is a Functional Abilities Form (FAF)?

The FAF is a WSIB form that documents your physical capabilities and limitations. It lists activities you can do, activities you can do with restrictions, and activities you currently can’t do. This form guides return-to-work planning by helping your employer understand what modified work might be suitable.

I developed my condition gradually from work—is this covered?

Yes. WSIB covers both sudden injuries and conditions that develop over time from work activities (occupational diseases and repetitive strain injuries). These claims can be more complex because you need to demonstrate that work activities caused or significantly contributed to your condition. Proper documentation of your work tasks and how they relate to your symptoms is important.

My injury happened a while ago—can I still file a claim?

You generally have six months from the date of injury to file a WSIB claim. For gradual-onset conditions, the timeline starts when you become aware the condition is work-related. If it’s been longer than six months, WSIB may still consider your claim if there’s a valid reason for the delay, but prompt reporting is always better.

Can I see other healthcare providers too?

Yes. You may benefit from multiple providers—for example, physiotherapy combined with massage therapy or chiropractic care. At our clinic, we offer multiple disciplines that can work together on your care. WSIB may authorize treatment from different providers if it’s reasonable and necessary for your recovery.

What if I re-injure myself at work?

If you re-injure the same body part, you may be able to reopen your previous claim or file a new claim depending on the circumstances. If it’s a new injury to a different body part, that’s a new claim. Report the injury promptly and contact WSIB to clarify how it should be handled.
