The Core of Chiropractic: Spinal Manipulation

The treatment most associated with chiropractic is spinal manipulation (also called chiropractic adjustment). This is a hands-on technique where the chiropractor applies a controlled, quick thrust to a joint—most commonly in the spine—to restore normal movement and function.

You've probably heard the "pop" or "crack" that often accompanies manipulation. This sound is called cavitation—it's caused by gas bubbles forming in the joint fluid when the joint surfaces are rapidly separated. It's the same mechanism as cracking your knuckles, and it's not bones grinding or moving "back into place."

How does manipulation help? Research suggests several mechanisms:

  • Restoring joint mobility: Manipulation can restore normal movement to joints that have become stiff or restricted
  • Pain relief: Through neurophysiological effects including stimulation of mechanoreceptors, inhibition of pain signals, and release of endorphins
  • Muscle relaxation: Reducing muscle spasm and tension around the treated area
  • Improved function: Better joint mobility translates to improved overall movement and function

Beyond Manipulation: A Complete Approach

While spinal manipulation is what chiropractors are best known for, modern evidence-based chiropractic involves much more. Our chiropractor uses a range of techniques and approaches based on what's best for your specific condition:

  • Joint mobilization: Gentler, oscillating movements to improve joint mobility without the thrust
  • Soft tissue therapy: Treating muscles, tendons, and fascia to reduce tension and improve tissue health
  • Exercise prescription: Specific exercises to strengthen weak areas, improve flexibility, and prevent recurrence
  • Education: Understanding your condition, posture, ergonomics, and self-management strategies
  • Instrument-assisted techniques: Tools like Activator or drop-piece tables for patients who prefer alternatives to manual manipulation
  • Lifestyle advice: Guidance on activity modification, sleep positions, workplace setup, and injury prevention

Relieving your pain could be easier than you think.

Chiropractic as Part of Your Healthcare Team

chiropractor Oakville ON

At Midas Physiotherapy, our chiropractor works alongside physiotherapists, massage therapists, and athletic therapists. This collaborative approach means you benefit from multiple perspectives and treatment options.

When Chiropractic Alone Is Enough

Many patients do very well with chiropractic care alone, particularly for acute mechanical problems that respond quickly to manipulation and exercise. If your condition is straightforward and you're progressing well, there's no need to complicate your care.

When Combined Care Works Better

Some conditions benefit from combining chiropractic with other therapies:

We communicate directly within our team, so your care is coordinated—not fragmented. You don't have to figure out who to see; we help guide you to the right combination of services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?

No. Chiropractors are primary healthcare providers in Ontario—you can book directly without a referral from a physician. However, some insurance plans may have specific requirements, so check your coverage.

Is the "cracking" sound safe? What causes it?

Yes, the sound is safe. It's called cavitation—caused by gas bubbles forming in the joint fluid when the joint is rapidly stretched. It's the same mechanism as cracking your knuckles. The sound is not bones grinding, rubbing, or moving "back into place." Not all effective treatments produce a sound, and the pop itself isn't what creates the therapeutic effect.

Will I need to keep coming back forever?

No. Our goal is to resolve your problem and discharge you from active care. Some patients choose periodic maintenance visits to stay feeling well, but this is entirely your choice—not something we push. If you're being told you need to come indefinitely, that's a red flag. Effective treatment should get you better, not create dependency.

Is chiropractic treatment painful?

Most patients find treatment comfortable, and many experience immediate relief. There may be some discomfort when treating very tender areas or moving stiff joints. Mild soreness after treatment is common and usually resolves within 24–48 hours. If anything is too uncomfortable, we can always modify our approach.

What's the difference between a chiropractor and a physiotherapist?

Both are regulated healthcare professionals who treat musculoskeletal conditions. Chiropractors emphasize spinal manipulation and focus on joint function, while physiotherapists emphasize exercise rehabilitation and use various modalities. There's significant overlap—both can do manual therapy, prescribe exercises, and treat similar conditions. The best choice often depends on your specific condition and personal preference. At our clinic, they work together.

Can chiropractors help with conditions other than back pain?

Yes. While back pain is the most common reason people see chiropractors, we also treat neck pain, headaches, joint pain throughout the body, and various musculoskeletal conditions. Chiropractors also provide preventive care, ergonomic advice, and exercise guidance.

Is chiropractic safe during pregnancy?

Yes, chiropractic care is generally safe during pregnancy with appropriate modifications. We use special positioning and gentler techniques. Many pregnant women find chiropractic helpful for back pain, pelvic pain, and other pregnancy-related discomforts. Always inform us if you're pregnant so we can adapt our approach.

How quickly will I feel better?

This varies by condition. Many patients with acute problems notice improvement within 1–3 visits. Chronic conditions typically take longer. We'll give you realistic expectations based on your specific situation. If you're not improving as expected, we'll reassess and adjust our approach or consider other options.

Do I need X-rays before treatment?

Not usually. Routine X-rays for uncomplicated back or neck pain are not recommended by clinical guidelines. We only refer for imaging when there are specific clinical indications—such as suspected fracture, significant trauma, or red flags suggesting serious pathology. If X-rays or other imaging are needed, we can arrange referrals.

Is chiropractic covered by insurance?

Most extended health insurance plans in Ontario cover chiropractic care. Coverage amounts vary by plan. We can provide receipts for insurance submission or direct billing where available. Chiropractic is also covered under WSIB for workplace injuries and some auto insurance claims for motor vehicle accidents.

Can children see a chiropractor?

Yes. Chiropractors can treat children and adolescents with musculoskeletal problems. Techniques are modified for age and size. Common reasons children see chiropractors include sports injuries, postural issues, and back or neck pain from heavy backpacks or device use.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. For spinal examination and treatment, it's helpful to wear or bring a loose-fitting shirt. We'll provide appropriate draping for any examination that requires it.
